Case Centre for Social Sector

The Case Centre at Centre for Social Impact and Philanthropy, Ashoka University is the first-of-its-kind initiative from India, designed for the world.

Philanthropy and the social sector are complex, evolving ecosystems. They demand bold leadership — and structured opportunities for reflection, learning, and knowledge-sharing. Too often, leaders are forced to reinvent the wheel rather than build on proven models. The Case Centre seeks to change that.

From India, For the World

Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to change the way leaders learn. By bringing decision-focused pedagogy that bridges academic rigour with real-world practice, the Case Centre equips nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, and practitioners to apply insights directly to the challenges they face — and in turn drive greater impact in their organisations and communities.

The Centre will build a global repository of teaching cases that capture pivotal moments of leadership, strategy, and decision-making in philanthropy and the social sector.

Beyond producing cases, we will partner with capacity-building organisations, enabling them to inject case pedagogy into their programmes. This would contribute to ensuring that reflective, decision-based learning becomes central to leadership development across the sector.

How the Case Centre Works

The case centre works on two parallel tracks:

Knowledge Production

Original, high-quality cases on leadership, created in-house and in partnership with leading funders, nonprofits and institutions.

Capacity Building

Training academics, practitioners and capacity-building organisations in case writing and case-based teaching — supported by expert faculty from leading Indian and global academic institutions.

Creating a Global Community of Practice

At its core, the Case Centre is more than a library – it is a community of practice.

Academics, funders, nonprofits, and facilitators will come together to write, teach, and learn from real-world exemplars, turning individual stories into shared wisdom.
This community will:

By anchoring collaboration at every stage, the Case Centre will ensure that case pedagogy becomes not just a tool, but a culture — changing the way the global social sector learns.

Case Writing and Teaching Workshop Programme

The Case Centre at the Centre for Social Impact and Philanthropy (CSIP), Ashoka University, invites academics to join as co-creators of knowledge in a pioneering initiative to develop a world-class repository of decision-focused case studies for the social impact sector. This initiative seeks to build sector-wide capacity to both produce and use cases, fostering a new generation of case writers and teachers equipped to strengthen leadership across the sector.

The Case Writing and Teaching Programme is designed for early- to mid-career academics from premier institutions and senior practitioners from learning and development organisations. The program will equip participants to author and teach high-quality, decision-focused cases tailored to the social sector, We also hope that teachers will adopt cases in their curriculum to make it accessible to the sector leaders.

The programme is anchored by the guidance of Prof. Kasturi Rangan, a globally acclaimed faculty member at Harvard Business School and a leading authority on social enterprise and nonprofit management.
